Hyperbolic discounting and the standard model: Eliciting discount functions
نویسنده
چکیده
Experiments on static intertemporal choice nd evidence of particularly extreme impatience toward immediate rewards. While this is often taken as support for hyperbolic discounting, it could also arise because the most likely participants in experiments are also those with the most immediate need for money. We conduct a calibration exercise and nd that the extreme impatience observed in experiments can be accommodated by a standard exponential discounting model with no discounting and expectation of a smallincrease in the base consumption level. The calibration uses existing estimates of curvature of utility. Keywords: Experiments, Hyperbolic Discounting, Exponential Discounting, Preference Reversals, Decreasing Impatience, DU anomalies. Discounting of delayed rewards is not hyperbolic.
Delay discounting refers to decision-makers' tendency to value immediately available goods more than identical goods available only after some delay. In violation of standard economic theory, decision-makers frequently exhibit dynamic inconsistency; their preferences change simply due to the passage of time. The standard explanation for this behavior has appealed to the nature of decision-maker...
متن کاملThe Optimal Allocation of Iran's Natural Gas
T he optimal allocation of natural gas resources to various uses such as final and intermediate consumption, injection into oil fields, and exports can help policymakers to use this kind of resources efficiently. Empirical evidence support using hyperbolic discount rates instead of fixed discount rates in the economic literature. The purpose of this study is to maximize the social we...
متن کاملEliciting Risk and Time Preferences
Abstract. We design experiments to jointly elicit risk and time preferences for the adult Danish population. We find that joint elicitation results in estimates of discount rates that are dramatically lower than those found in previous studies. Estimation of latent time preferences requires that one specify a theoretical structure to understand risk and time choices, but we show that our main r...
متن کاملA General Mathematical Theory of Behavioral and Aggregate Discounting
A mathematical formalism is developed for the existence of unique invariants associated with wide classes of observed discounting behavior. These invariants are ‘exponential discount rate spectra,’ derived from the theory of completely monotone functions. Exponential discounting, the empirically important case of hyperbolic discounting, and so-called sub-additive discounting are each special ca...
متن کاملGeneral Equilibrium Tax Policy with Hyperbolic Consumers *
Recently David Laibson and others have argued in favor of using hyperbolic discount functions. The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether conventional wisdom, based on the standard model with exponential discounting, also holds in the case where consumers have hyperbolic discount functions. In other words do hyperbolic preferences matter for practical policy evaluation? Within the fram...
